Every Stone Fitted by Hand
Crazy paving uses irregularly shaped pieces of natural stone (typically limestone, travertine or sandstone) laid in a random pattern rather than a uniform grid. The result is an organic, textured surface where no two jobs look the same.
Whether it looks rustic-charming or just plain old depends on the stone and the person laying it. Get both right and crazy paving is one of the best-looking surfaces you can put in a Perth garden.
Perth Landscape Guys supplies and installs crazy paving across the full Perth metro area, from Currambine to Mandurah, using stone sourced through Fremantle Stone, Eco Stone and Remastone.

Crazy paving suits several spots around a Perth property:

Limestone is the most common choice for Perth residential crazy paving. It is:
Fremantle Stone manufactures limestone pavers in Western Australia designed to stay cool underfoot, and for crazy paving it gives a clean, neutral finish (creamy white to pale grey) suited to both contemporary and traditional gardens.

Travertine brings a warmer, more textured look with natural colour variation across ivory, taupe and honey tones. It is porous by nature, giving it excellent grip and helping it shed heat, which makes it particularly well suited to pool surrounds. The porous surface does mean it needs sealing before installation and periodically after, but that applies to limestone too.
Travertine comes in filled and unfilled versions. Unfilled is generally the better outdoor choice, since the natural texture adds to the finish and the holes aren’t a structural problem. Filled travertine has resin applied to smooth the surface, but resin can deteriorate under prolonged heat, worth considering in Perth.
Sandstone offers earthy ochre and red-brown tones that suit a more rustic or bush-garden aesthetic. It is durable and looks good in the right setting. It’s less commonly used in Perth than limestone or travertine, but worth considering if the colour palette suits your outdoor scheme.

Crazy paving takes longer to install than regular-pattern paving, since each piece has to be assessed, positioned and cut to fit its neighbours. That judgement work is what separates a well-fitted job from one where the gaps are inconsistent and the surface looks haphazard.
The base preparation is the same as any paving job:
Getting the fall right matters more with crazy paving than with uniform pavers, because any low spots in the stone will pool water and, over time, undermine the mortar between pieces.

Grout colour is worth thinking about before you commit. Grey or charcoal grout against light limestone creates contrast and defines each stone clearly, reading as deliberate. Off-white or sand grout blends the surface together for a softer finish. There’s no right answer, but it’s worth discussing before work starts rather than after.

It needs sealing, like any natural stone paving. We recommend dip-sealing the stone before installation, then re-sealing every two to three years depending on exposure. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner for ongoing care and avoid anything with bleach or acid, which will gradually break down the surface.
Grout gaps need to stay full, since cracked or washed-out mortar lets weeds take hold. It’s worth topping up gaps as they appear rather than letting them spread, the kind of low-level maintenance any paved surface in Perth requires.
Beyond that, crazy paving is not a high-maintenance choice. Sealed limestone or travertine holds up well in Perth’s heat and UV without fading significantly.

Not necessarily. The stone itself costs about the same as regular-cut pavers, but installation takes longer because each piece is individually fitted, so labour costs more. Limestone crazy paving has the same entry price as regular limestone pavers, because the extra labour offsets the lower material cost.
It depends on stone thickness and base preparation, since thinner stones aren’t suitable for vehicle loads. Travertine and limestone at the right thickness can work for a lightly used residential driveway, but we assess this on-site and tell you honestly if your preferred stone isn’t suited to the load.
French pattern paving uses a repeating arrangement of four rectangular sizes for a regular-but-varied look, while crazy paving uses fully random, irregular pieces with no repeating pattern. French pattern reads as more formal; crazy paving reads as more organic. Both use natural stone, but the installation approach and finished look differ.
Yes. Natural stone crazy paving (limestone, travertine and sandstone) should be sealed before installation and re-sealed every two to three years. Sealing protects the surface, slows water and stain absorption, and helps maintain colour. We advise on suitable products when we quote the job.
Most residential jobs take two to four days, depending on the area size and how much base preparation is needed. We give you a clear timeline at the quote, and if demolition of existing paving is required, that’s factored into the scope and timeframe.
We supply everything. As preferred installers for Fremantle Stone, Eco Stone and Remastone, we have direct access to Perth’s main stone suppliers, so you get material quality we can vouch for. There’s no need to source stone separately.
Limestone is the most common choice in Perth and gives a clean, neutral finish. Travertine is warmer and very well suited to pool surrounds. Sandstone suits a more rustic look. We talk through the options with you at the quote.
Yes. Darker grout defines each stone, lighter grout blends the surface together. We recommend deciding before work starts, and we are happy to talk it through with you.
