    Paved Driveways in Perth

Where Most of the Work Happens

A paved driveway has to handle vehicle loads, deal with Perth’s heat, drain properly through our sandy ground, and still look good from the street.

Getting the base preparation right is the part that separates a driveway that lasts 20 years from one that shifts and settles in three. That’s where most of the work happens.

    Driveway Paver Options

    Choosing the Right Paver

Prices depend on area size, pattern complexity (herringbone and French patterns require more cuts and labour), and base preparation needed.

Removal of existing paving adds demolition and disposal costs. We assess everything on-site and provide a written quote before work begins.

    Driveway Pavers Compared

    Brick and Concrete Pavers

The most popular choice for Perth driveways. Strong, available in a wide range of colours and finishes, and at 50mm thickness they handle vehicle loads without issue. Remastone concrete pavers and Fremantle Stone clay bricks are both locally manufactured, consistent quality and reliable supply.

    Limestone Pavers

Affordable and attractive, but softer and more porous than brick or concrete. Requires proper sealing and can wear faster under daily vehicle traffic. Best suited to light-traffic driveways.

    Travertine Pavers

Performs better in alfresco and pool areas than driveways. Requires a compacted concrete or road base (not sand) and sealing is essential in Perth’s climate. The natural surface can show oil stains more visibly, worth considering before choosing.

    Premium Travertine and Porcelain

Porcelain is dense, low-maintenance, and impervious to oil, no sealing required. However, it needs a concrete base and is less forgiving of substrate movement than brick or concrete. Premium travertine carries the same care requirements. Both sit at the upper end of the price range. Learn more about our travertine paving service in Perth here.

Why Base Preparation Matters More Than The Paver

    No Shortcuts on the Base

Perth’s sandy soil drains well but doesn’t bind or compact like clay: without a proper road base, pavers will settle and shift. This is the most common reason driveways in Perth fail early.

A correct base involves excavating 200 to 250mm, laying 100 to 150mm of compacted crushed limestone road base, then a 30 to 40mm bedding sand layer. Pavers must also be 50mm thick: standard 35 to 40mm pedestrian pavers are not rated for daily vehicle loads.

We never skip the base work. On-site we assess soil conditions, existing drainage, and the grade needed to carry water away from the house, all factored into your quote.

    Council Crossover Requirements In Perth

    Crossovers Built to Council Spec

The section of driveway crossing the verge is a council crossover and has its own regulations: width limits, approved materials, boundary clearances, and proximity to street trees and power poles all vary by council.

If your project includes a new or modified crossover, you’ll need to check your council’s specific requirements. Some councils offer a rebate for approved crossover construction.

We advise on this during the quote process and install crossovers to council spec across the Perth metro area.

How Long Does A Paved Driveway Take?

A Clear Timeline With Your Quote

A standard residential driveway, say 40 to 60 square metres, typically takes two to three days. That includes site preparation, base work, installation, cutting, and clean-up.

Larger driveways or those requiring substantial demolition of existing paving take longer, and we’ll give you a clear timeline when we quote.

The biggest variable is usually how much old paving needs to come out and what the existing base condition looks like.

    Driveway Paving FAQ

In most cases, yes. Laying new pavers over old paving that’s in poor condition or at the wrong height generally causes problems. The old surface needs to come up to allow proper excavation, base preparation, and drainage grading. In some situations, where the existing concrete slab is in good condition and at the right level, pavers can go over the top, but this is the exception rather than the rule. We assess this on-site and tell you what we find.

Our quotes include the paver and installation. What they don’t include is demolition and removal of existing paving if required, drainage work beyond standard grading, or any council crossover applications. These are quoted separately based on what the job actually needs. You will get a written quote that shows everything before any work starts.

They will if the base is done wrong. Perth’s sandy ground drains well but it doesn’t bind like clay, so a compacted crushed limestone road base is what holds a driveway in place. Driveways laid directly on sand without a proper road base will shift. This is not a marketing claim: it’s why we excavate properly and build the base in compacted layers before a paver goes down.

Both can work on a driveway, but they have more specific requirements than brick or concrete pavers. Travertine needs a proper sealed surface and its natural holes can collect oil staining more visibly than concrete. Porcelain needs a concrete base to handle the substrate movement it’s less tolerant of. Neither is wrong, but they need to be the right choice for the specific driveway and how it’s used. We’ll tell you honestly if we think a different material would perform better for your situation.

For the section of driveway within your property boundary, you generally do not need approval for a like-for-like replacement or new installation. The crossover, the part that crosses the verge to the road, is different. That section is subject to your local council’s requirements, which vary across Perth. We install crossovers to council specification and can advise on what applies in your council area.

The only way to give you an accurate price is an on-site visit. Driveway costs depend on the size and shape of the area, how much existing paving needs to come out, the condition of the current base, any drainage work required, and the pattern you choose. We come to you, measure the job, and give you a written price. There is no charge for the quote and no obligation.
